On the Turntable with Sunny War

Sunny War is a punk rocker, through and through. We couldn’t be more excited about her upcoming 10×10 performance  on May 22, every ticket is just $10. But before then, get into the Sunny War headspace with an energetic selection of records that inspire her.

The following was provided to the Hult Center by Sunny War.

Discocks – Long Live Oi!

I don’t know if it’s because it’s starting to get warmer outside or because I have recently relocated to a small town where I am very isolated….  but this is one of my favorite records right now.  I like listening to this while I ride my bike.  Never been to Japan but have stumbled upon so many Japanese punk and hardcore bands I love over the years.  At this point I am convinced they have the funnest punk scene on the planet.

The Toy Dolls – Dig That Groove Baby

This is just a classic.  Haven’t listened to it since I was 14 and recently got drunk and bought this album again.  I just like that it exists.  It definitely feels like I’m listening to a cartoon soundtrack.  If Alvin & the Chipmunks were an Oi band they’d be Toy Dolls.  The guitar playing is also very impressive!

Battalion Of Saints – Second Coming

This shit just rocks.  Probably one of the top 5 best hardcore albums ever made, easily.  I think I’m listening to this a lot lately because I’m homesick and they remind me of a lot of the bands I saw in Venice Beach growing up.  All the hardcore bands from west LA kinda tried to sound like these guys when I was a kid.  This is also a good record to listen to on bike rides.

Ho99o9 – United States Of Horror

Still dissecting this album.  It’s a masterpiece!  I recently bought their latest album and decided to re-listen to this one first…  I’ve gotten obsessed with it all over again.  I saw Ho99o9 play recently in Nashville and I can’t wait to see them again.  They are a perfect melting pot of all my favorite types of music.  They really inspire me to keep working on my own electronic music.  They really nail how dystopian the world feels and give the end of the world the perfect soundtrack.

JPEGMAFIA x Danny Brown – Scarring The Hoes

Just got this album and it rips!  JPEG is a fucking genius!  I don’t know what kind of drugs and insomnia he had while making these beats but God bless him.  Originally I bought it cos Danny Brown is my favorite rapper and I’m in love with him but now I’m just in awe of JPEG’s production.
