May 2023 Notebook

Welcome to The Notebook. Every month explore the new sounds that the Hult Center team (and some special guests) are listening to.

Is it possible to be overwhelmed by so much great music?

Vicki Infinito – Director of Programming and Booking

The new Arlo Parks album – My Soft Machine. It is just such a wonderful album, she is such a great songwriter! Weightless, I believe, is the first single and it is such indie pop goodness that gets stuck in your head for days.

Greg – House of Records

Upbeat party music just in time for summer. Slinky fuzz guitars, congas, and kooky vocals make for an exuberant sense of fun. No language barriers here. No matter what culture you may come from, this music makes you want to dance. And if you don’t dance, or can’t dance, just listening to it will put a smile on your face.
The neighbors up north in Ecuador throw their own party, with accordions, horns, and organs added to the mix of guitars and percussion that propel this wonderful music forward with great vitality. Sounds especially charming while the sun is shining.

Abbey Aronica – Marketing Manager

Hozier just released 3 singles in anticipation of his upcoming album “Unreal Unearth”. My favorite of the three is a track called ‘All Things End’.  So far, this album sounds a little different than what he has typically done, but overall, I really love the way he’s begun evolving as an artist and experimenting with different styles. All Things End is an upbeat song that celebrates life changes through an optimistic lens. The music video is also super dreamy that takes you on a ride of ups and downs. I’m really looking forward to this new album – I’ve loved his music for a long time now and am excited for good things to come!

I am overwhelmed by all the sound, but in a good way.

Four Kind of Horses carries a mood with its dissonant soundscape. PG’s voice sits atop, as perfect as ever. It’s reminiscent of “Scratch My Back,” albeit digital, but equally melancholy. PG has found a sound in his golden years, it’s pretty heavy, but I’m all for it.

Horror punks Creeper return with a new sound and it would appear that sound is The Sister of Mercy. While not wholly original it’s done with such care that I can’t help but love it. And Ian Miles guitar solo, I’m totally here for it. For fans of “The Lost Boys.”

Like the corpse flower, blooming only when it’s ready and for a blink in time, Blur is back. They are one of my favorite bands of all time and this song is dynamite.

Lektron stars Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), and Atom Willard  (Against Me!) and Hunter Burgan (AFI) and Randy Moore. Phew. Turn it up and don’t get a speeding ticket. And it’s pre-ordered.

Peter Gabriel, Four Kinds of Horses

Creeper, Cry to Heaven

Blur, The Narcissist

Lektron, Dirty Jacks
