Soromundi the Musical, written by Music Director Lisa Hellemn, is an original show chronicling the journey of Soromundi, Lesbian Chorus of Eugene. You will start this journey by attending a Gay Rights Parade in Portland when the founders first thought of forming a community chorus and attend rehearsals in the founder’s home in year 1989. The chorus sang its first public concert in 1990 without names printed in a program as Lesbians were bullied and often fired from their jobs at that time. By 1998 the atmosphere was less extreme when the chorus did their first tour, and you will ride along from city to city to the song “Get on the Bus”. You will gain an understanding of the challenges and successes experienced by the chorus as they transitioned into an all-inclusive women’s ensemble, reflecting the broader cultural shifts of the era. Unlike most, this chorus selects 80% of its annual repertoire. “My First Song Selection” whimsically narrates how this happens. The story continues through the Covid challenges and ultimately ends with the 35th Anniversary Concert held at the Hult Center last May.
