One of the greatest masterworks of all time, the Grand Mass in C Minor, like Mozart’s Requiem Mass, was never completed. Mozart began writing the Grand Mass in 1782 as a wedding present for his bride Constanze. Portions of the Mass were performed the following summer in the Peterskirche, with Constanze as the soprano soloist. Haunting and transcendent, the soprano solo passages have been a staple of the finest soprano soloists in the world, and the full work, though missing some sections of the traditional Latin Mass, is a major undertaking for choirs and orchestras. Even as a “torso,” the music stands on its own. As a concert performance, it is not necessary to adhere to the liturgical setting, and the Grand Mass can be appreciated in the same way as the Venus de Milo. The work requires an accomplished professional solo quartet. To take full advantage of the gifts of our professional soloists, we will fill out the program with arias of their specialty, and also have them lead a voice master class as part of our education outreach – activities which we have found to be particularly successful in past concerts.
